Brazil is large and complicated, and 2014 was big and complicated too. So instead of trying to summarize it, we asked From Brazil friends and contributors to submit photos – any photos – that they thought caught a slice of life in Brazil in 2014.

The captions are in the gallery, and they are also below with links to the photographers and journalists.

1. Mounted police at Passion of the Christ celebrations in Brejo da Madre de Deus, Recife.  By Darren McVeigh

2. A photo of the podium in Belo Horizonte right before Aecio Neves conceded defeat to Dilma Rousseff on election night. To me this summed up Brazil on so many levels: Everyone sticking their mic in a country striving for Order and Progress. By Gabriel Elizondo

3. Lowrider procession in São Paulo, inspired by Los Angeles culture. By Rafael Ambrosio

4. Tibau do Sul, Rio Grande do Norte. By María Martín

5. Police helicopter over Higienopolis, one of Brazil’s most upscale neighborhoods, during World Cup protests. By Tinko Czetwertynski

6. Breakdancing at the DAVILA Cultural Center in São Paulo. By Rafael Ambrosio

7. Women on the street in Recife. By Darren McVeigh

8. Marina Silva as she arrived at PSB headquarters in Brasilia to officially be nominated as the party candidate for president to replace Eduardo Campos. A crush of cameras awaited her as she stopped to briefly speak, and it was symbolic for me as it was Silva’s unexpected moment in the spotlight. By Gabriel Elizondo

9. Boa Viagem beach, Recife. By Darren McVeigh

10. Jalapão State Park, Tocantins. By Marina Oriente

11. A young caboclo waits nervously for a pre-Carnaval street practice to begin. By Darren McVeigh

12.Photo from Manaus a few weeks before the World Cup. Stumbled across this man painting the Brazilian flag on the street in front of his house. By Gabriel Elizondo.

13. An MTST protest outside Itaquera stadium a week or two before the World Cup in São Paulo. Behind the smoke, you can see a little bit of the stadium. Showed for me the contrast between “street power” represented by the protesters and “FIFA power” represented by the stadium. By Gabriel Elizondo
